Learning at Katoomba Leura Preschool
At Katoomba Leura Preschool we are influenced by the Reggio Emilia Philosophy, The EYLF, Bush Kindy and Nature Pedagogy. These influences along with input from our preschool and local communities, our geographical location in the beautiful Blue Mountains along with our ties to our local environs, influence every aspect of our children's experience.
We have three rooms, The Bowerbird Room, The Lilli Pilli Room and the Bilby Room. Each room has it’s own evolving look and feel as our team of educators constantly respond to their children’s interests by creating changing spaces for play and learning. Our Philosophy reflects our view that children are capable and constructors of their own knowledge and the adults surrounding them are co-learners and here to faciliate that learning.
Attention is given to creating a beautiful, home-like atmosphere and each room is filled with indoor plants and natural colours and light. Uniquely designed learning areas include reading, writing, creative art, music, dramatic play, sensory play, cooking and discovery.
We provide for different learning capacities and learning styles and invite children and families to contribute ideas, concerns and questions. Our program is emergent and flexible recognising the individual interests and requirements of each child. We encourage families to speak with us and what is happening in their lives outside of Preschool in order for our team to personalise activities to their child’s current interests. This also helps us to support them through their current developmental milestones and struggles – such as the arrival of a new baby in the family.
Our outdoor area offers children the opportunity to play and explore in an open and delightfully green garden, featuring a man-made ‘riverbed’ both dry and wet during the different seasons, a sand-pit and climbing frames. We also have three very happy chickens who often free-range with the children and enjoy munching on luncheon leftovers.
Parents and educators alike have given their time and effort over the years to help create this wonderful space for the children. Our garden working bees are a great opportunity to get to know other parents and forge friendships as well as contributing to the Preschool.
Children’s Services in Australia must adhere to the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the Education and Care Services National Law. Katoomba Leura Preschool is required to have the following mandatory policies which help to govern and determine our legal responsibilities.
